There is one item on every backpacker’s bucket list while travelling in Australia: learn how to surf. And I did! It’s a great idea to learn how to surf before you set off on your travels, because along the coast there are a lot of options to surf. However, due to the fact that there were quite a few shark sightings during the months I travelled, I kept the surfing to a minimum. But nevertheless, I am happy that at least now I know how to surf! In this article I’ll tell you why I recommend that you join Surfcamp Australia!

LOCATION: SEVEN MILE BEACH, GERROA

Leave Sydney behind to find yourself in more rural lands. Gerroa is a coastal town approximately two hours south of Sydney. We stayed right near the beach (duh), at a large campervan park. There were quite many backpackers, so we were spilled into two groups. Every day of the week we would have 4 hours of surf lessons, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.

Seven Mile Beach is a perfect location to learn how to surf. The waves are easy to ride and there are absolutely no tourists around.

PROFESSIONAL (& INTERNATIONAL) INSTRUCTORS

After trying on our fashionable wet suits, it was time to hit the water. Our instructors for the week were Matty & Simon, two local guys. We named ourselves the Willy Wombats, I don’t remember why though.

Push up

Chickenleg

Stand up

Four words I’ll probably never forget.

ACTIVITIES TO DO

If you didn’t feel like surfing on occasion, there were plenty of other things to do around there. You can spend your time socializing, drinking games, playing werewolf, chilling in the hammock or by the campfire. The last day of surfcamp is called funday, where you could dress up while surfing.
